Mineral MoonDay~Lapis Lazuli

This Months Mineral is ...

Lapis Lazuli

Lapis has been around for so many years!! It's lovely warm blue color with sparkly specks of pyrite makes it a super attractive piece! Adorn in beautiful pieces of jewelry, Lapis has deep history and we'll learn more about that today!

It is said that Lapis has been around since the dawn of time and found as early as 7th millennium BCE.

Lapis Lazuli was highly coveted by the Ancient Egyptians. In fact, the funeral mask of Tutankhamun (Aka King Tut)

<1341-1323 BCE>

had Lapis Lazuli embedded in the eyebrows and around the eyes.

Beautiful, right?

Back in those days Cleopatra enjoyed taking her Lapis and grinding it into a power-like substance, allowing her to use Lapis Lazuli as her eyeshadow.

((BTW...don't try that at home, super toxic))

I have enjoyed working with Lapis Lazuli for quite sometime now!! In fact, when I 1st got into Crystals... Lapis Lazuli was one of the Crystals calling to me!

Who doesn't like a little bit of sparkle?

Now, blue Crystals are sometimes one of the hardest Crystals to identity! Here is a tip that will help...if you happen to notice a sparkle of gold within its structure....then you got a Lapis Lazuli!!

Sometimes mistaken for Sodalite, but there is a difference between Sodalite and Lapis!! One key give away is that Sodalite has a bit more white in it's matrix, or more black coloring. The biggest clue that you don't have Sodalite is if it has NO trace of the sparkly golden pyrite inclusions!!

What Does it Look Like?

Dark Indigo Blue

Small bits of white swirled in

Golden Pyrite inclusions

There are different qualities of Lapis Lazuli... the lower grade quality is where you will notice less blue & gold, more white with a lighter blue coloring.

The grade quality isn't as important as it is that your attracted to it!

Lapis Lazuli is a combination of a few minerals...

  • Lazurite

  • Calcite

  • Pyrite

Due to the fact that Lapis has a combination of mineral as inclusions, we get the benefits of all these lovely Crystal Friend as well!

Where is Lapis Lazuli Found??

India, Pakistan and Afghanistan are where you will find the best Lapis Lazuli Mines.

It has also been found in small quanities in Italy, Mongolia, the United States & Canada.

These days Afghanistan is the place most of the Lapis is being mined from.

There was a point in time (a few years ago, 2016)

where a shortage was happening of Lapis!! In fact, it was quite hard to find it in stores. What the shop owners had, was old stock.

What happened was the Lapis Lazuli was still being mined, however they decided to drive the prices up...way up!

They say the reason why was that the mine in Afghanistan had been "taken hostage" by the Taliban. Don't know all the truths to this, but what I do know is that Afghanistan does produce the highest quality of Lapis Lazuli.

The good news is...things have gone back to normal now, so Lapis is again found more easily in the stores!!

Benefits of Lapis Lazuli...

Connecting with your spiritually as well as helping your communication skills, Lapis is defiantly one to have in your Crystal Companion kit!

It's also very beneficial in ridding headaches and migraines. When ever I feel a Migraine coming on, I reach for my Lapis, set it on my 3rd eye and relax...it does wonders!!

Emotionally, it's very calming and helps reduce stress and tension. Physically helpful with throat issues, dizziness, ears, aches and pains.
